Dr. Dilip S. Kiyawat, Leading Spine & Neurosurgeon in the Field of Spinal Tumors
Spinal Tumors
A spinal cord tumor is an abnormal growth of cells within the spinal cord or surrounding
structures. These tumors can be benign or malignant, disrupting the normal functioning of
the spinal cord. The primary spinal tumour arise from the spinal cord, its surrounding
coverings or the bony spinal column. Meningioma and neurofibroma are the commonest
benign tumors of spine.
Symptoms:- may include back pain, weakness, and numbness in one or all limbs. Problems
with coordination, difficulty in walking, and poor control of bladder function warrant
immediate attention.
Diagnosis involves imaging tests like MRI and CT scans.
Treatment:- Most of the cases require surgical excision of the tumor as early as possible.
Other modalities of management are radiation therapy, and chemotherapy, depending on the
tumor type and location. Early detection and intervention are crucial for better outcomes, and
a multidisciplinary approach involving neurosurgeons, oncologists, and rehabilitation
specialists is often employed to manage spinal cord tumors effectively.
Causes

Rehabilitation
Tailored exercises to improve strength, flexibility, and mobility. Focus on restoring function affected by surgery or other treatments
SPINAL TUMORS
Pain Radiation
Pain that radiates along nerve pathways due to nerve compression. Sciatica-like symptoms if the tumor affects nerve roots.
Physical Therapy
Tailored exercises to improve strength, flexibility, and mobility. Focus on restoring function affected by surgery or other treatments.
Targeted Therapies
Drugs that target specific aspects of cancer cells. May be used in certain cases based on tumor characteristics.
Pain Management
Addressing residual pain through medications or alternative therapies.
