LUMBAR CANAL STENOSIS
Lumbar canal stenosis is a condition characterized by the narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower spine. This narrowing can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, leading to various symptoms which include difficulty in walking, tingling & heaviness in both lower limbs after walking some distance. This condition is described as intermittent neurogenic claudication.
Causes
The spinal canal becomes narrow due to thickning of the ligaments & multiple disc prolapses as the age advance
Symptoms
Symptoms of a lumber spinal canal stenosis include pain & tingling of lower limbs after spending & walking for some time.
Treatment
In early stages the patients are benefitted by physiotherapy. In later stages surgical treatment by decompression of the spinal canal is essential.
Rehabilitation
For those who undergo surgery, rehabilitation focuses on gradually returning to normal activities.
LUMBAR SPINAL STENOSIS
Herniated Discs
Discs that bulge or herniate into the spinal canal can contribute to stenosis.
Imaging Studies
X-rays, MRI, or CT scans can provide detailed images of the spine and help identify the extent of stenosis.
Difficulty Walking
Patients may experience leg pain and weakness, particularly during prolonged periods of standing or walking.
Decompressive Surgery
Removal of bone or tissue to create more space for the nerves (laminectomy).
